Durham North Carolina

Most of us have heard of Durham North Carolina because of the famous movie starring Susan Sarandon, Tim Robbins and Kevin Costner, called Bull Durham.

Bull Durham is a 1988 American romantic comedy about baseball. It is based upon the minor league experiences of writer/director Ron Shelton and depicts the players and fans of the Durham Bulls, a minor league baseball team in Durham, North Carolina. Kevin Costner stars as "Crash" Davis, a veteran catcher brought in to teach rookie pitcher Ebby Calvin "Nuke" LaLoosh (Tim Robbins) about the game in preparation for reaching the Major Leagues. Baseball groupie Annie Savoy (Susan Sarandon) romances Nuke but finds herself increasingly attracted to Crash. Great story, with great characters and I have to say, it is a great movie!

But Durham North Carolina is more than the movie. It is the fifth largest city in the state of North Carolina and the 85th largest in the United States by population, and home of Duke University and North Carolina Central University, and is also one of the vertices of the Research Triangle area which is home of the Research Triangle Park.

Durham North Carolina is a creative environment, that focuses on learning, achievement, creativity, research, and industry. As one of North Carolina's great vacation spots, it offers more to do than most cities anywhere in the US.

Come to Durham and enjoy North Carolina activities such as:

  • Art museums and galleries
  • Art studios
  • Outdoor murals and plazas
  • Vintage art & antiques
  • Entertainment
  • Theatre
  • Movies
  • Carriage rides
  • Restaurants
  • Golf
  • live music

and more...

If you want to learn some North Carolina history, this is the place to come. Visit state historic sites and learn about our history and enjoy learning about Durham's historic churches, public buildings, mills, and the civil war.

But that's not all. If you love the outdoors, try biking in our beautiful parks, fishing, running, hiking North Carolina, horseback riding, and even bird watching.

And don't forget all of the sports available in Durham. You can play golf on some of the most beautiful golf courses, have a nice game of tennis or if you'd rather be a spectator, try watching the many North Carolina sports teams. If you like baseball, you can see, you guessed it, our own Durham Bulls. Other sports you can see... basketball, football, lacrosse, polo, and soccer.

Although Durham is not Hollywood, far from it (thank goodness!), there have been many movies filmed in the area. The reason? Well, Durham has so much to offer with its pure beauty and the friendly people who call it home, make it the perfect place to film.

Watch these movies and see if you recognize Durham North Carolina.
