GETTING AROUND

Getting around in North Carolina is a breeze. With five, very well maintained highways that criss-cross the state you can get around easily. They are I-26, I-40, I-77, I-85 and I-95.

By calling the 511 travel information line, you can get access to road conditions, weather forecasts and all kinds of additional travel related information such as detours or special events that may cause congestion on the highways. As you travel about, you will see welcome centers and rest stops that provide restrooms, telephones, food, drinking water and some even provide grills, picnic areas and crafts shows. The welcome centers are very popular for travelers because of their statewide focus of providing vacationers with information, clean facilities, access to travel guides and attractions as well as the friendly attitude that is a trademark of North Carolina.

You need a place to stay? Professional travel counselors will book rooms and offer additional services at no charge.

The roads are not the only way to get around in North Carolina

FERRIES

Since the 1920's the ferry system has been a fun and exciting way to get around the North Carolina Coast.

and in some areas...the only way!

...well, unless you want to swim!

The great thing about traveling by ferry is that you can take your car or other means of travel along with you!

The North Carolina Coast has eight ferries that run all year long. They are located in:

  • Hatteras

  • Southport-Fort Fisher

  • Bayview-Aurora

  • Cedar Island

  • Currituck-Knotts Island

  • Cherry Branch-Minnesott Beach

  • Ocracoke

  • Swan Quarter

TRAINS

Amtrack has two routes that run through North Carolina's eastern and central (called the Piedmont) regions that make getting around by train a popular choice.

There are twelve passenger trains that run daily and provide service to sixteen North Carolina cities on six different routes.

They include the Piedmont the northbound and southbound Carolinian, Silver Meteor, Crescent, Silver Star and Palmetto.

BICYCLES

Yes, you heard me right, I did say bicycles!

Did you know that in North Carolina bicyclists have every right that motor vehicles do? It's true, really.

They have also have the responsibilities as well. They have to travel with traffic, stop at stop signs, signal for turns, and must have a bright headlight for when it's dark.

It's hard to believe but it's true. So if you would like to see North Carolina by bicycle...

GO FOR IT!

Oh, but you can just get around in your car too!

No matter how you want to travel North Carolina, be safe and follow the rules of the road and make getting around a piece of cake.
