Now, I'm not one to brag, but I do have to say that North Carolina has the BEST barbecue sauce out there!
But you have to understand, when we talk about barbecue, we are not talking about just one kind because we have many styles to choose from!
I have written down a few of our favorite barbecue sauce recipes, so go ahead, give 'em a try!
Carolina Barbecue
This one is ready in 30 minutes and is pretty easy to make!
Makes 2 cups
Ingredients:
1 cup distilled white vinegar
1 cup cider vinegar
1 tablespoon sugar
1 tablespoon crushed red pepper flakes
1 tablespoon hot red pepper flakes
Salt and ground pepper to taste
Mix all ingredients, including salt and pepper, to taste, in medium bowl.
North Carolina Eastern Style Barbecue Sauce with Herbs
You will want to try this North Carolina barbecue sauce recipe! Also Ready in 30 minutes.
Makes: 2.25 cups
Ingredients:
1 cup cider vinegar
1/2 cup water
2/3 cup minced onion
1 clove garlic
1 teaspoon pepper
1/2 teaspoon salt
2 teaspoons red pepper flakes
1 teaspoon sugar
1 bay leaf
2/3 teaspoon thyme
3 tablespoons peanut oil
3 teaspoons dry mustard
1 teaspoon cold water
Boil all but the last two ingredients for five minutes.
Dissolve mustard in water and add.
North Carolina Vinegar Sauce
Ready in 30 minutes and easy!
Ingredients:
1 gallon cider vinegar (5% acidity)
3 cups water (to taste)
1/4 cup salt
2 tablespoons red pepper flakes
3 tablespoons black pepper
2 tablespoons crushed red pepper
1 cup dark brown sugar
Mix all Ingredients and let it sit for at least 4 hours before serving.
Authentic Carolina Pork Barbecue Sauce
This North Carolina barbecue Sauce recipe is ready in 2 hrs but not too difficult to make.
Serves: 10 Ingredients:
1 pork butt (shoulder)
1 gallon cider vinegar
10 ounces Worcestershire sauce
1 1/4 ounce crushed red pepper flakes
Mix all sauce ingredients together. Use as a basting sauce for the meat. The pork has to be barbecued - cooked long and slow over a real wood fire, preferably hickory.
Temp should be around 220 degrees, and it takes at least 1-1/2 hours per pound, or until internal temp. reaches 150-160 degrees. Serve on a roll.
North Carolina Eastern Style Sweet and Sour BBQ Sauce
If you like Sweet and Sour North Carolina barbecue sauce, you might like this one. Ready in 2 hrs and easy to make.
Ingredients:
2 cups cider vinegar
1 cup brown sugar
1 cup mustard
1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper
1 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
1 teaspoon Tabasco sauce
Mix thoroughly and allow about an hour for flavors to blend before serving.
Mid-South Carolina Mustard Sauce
Ready in 30 minutes and is easy
Makes about 2.5 cups
Ingredients:
1 cup cider vinegar
6 tablespoons Dijon mustard
2 tablespoons maple syrup or honey
4 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
1 teaspoon hot red pepper sauce
1 cup vegetable oil
2 teaspoons salt
Pinch of Ground black pepper
Mix all ingredients, including pepper to taste.
Western South Carolina-Style Barbecue Sauce
Ready in 30 minutes and is pretty easy
Makes about 2 cups
Ingredients:
1 tablespoon vegetable oil
1/2 medium onion, minced
2 medium garlic cloves, minced
1/2 cup cider vinegar
1/2 cup Worcestershire sauce
1 tablespoon dry mustard
1 tablespoon dark brown sugar
1 tablespoon paprika
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon cayenne pepper
1 cup ketchup
Directions:
Heat oil in 2-quart saucepan over medium heat. Add onion and garlic; saute until softened, 4-5 minutes. Stir in all the remaining ingredients except ketchup; bring to a boil. Reduce heat to low, then add ketchup. Cook, stir occasionally, until thickened, for about 15 to 20 minutes.
