The state transportation map is the department's most popular publication. The map of North Carolina features the state's extensive highway system, as well as important safety information. Along with the Division of Travel, Tourism and Film Development, NCDOT prints nearly two million copies each year.

North Carolina's department of transportation has designated 51 scenic byways throughout the mountains, Piedmont and coastal plain. These byways are described in an attractive, 173-page book, titled North Carolina's Scenic Byways, which has been reviewed by The New York Times.
