North Carolina Books

How I found the best North Carolina books...I wasn't even looking!

Before our family goes on vacation I usually load up on every travel book and guide ever published on that location. I just can't help it!

Funny thing about North Carolina's books...

I was browsing in the bookstore as I often do, with no intention of going to North Carolina, and I came across a travel book about North Carolina. I was hooked. I just couldn't put it down. And that was it, after reading about the beauty, the small towns, the friendly people, I just had to go and see for myself how beautiful it was.

I do love to read about traveling to new places. But something hit me as I read about North Carolina...I wanted to move there. Yes, that is what I said... move!

It probably sounds kinda crazy to you, but something inside stirred and I got home and announced that our next vacation had to be North Carolina. Thankfully, the family agreed it would be a great place to visit. Visit...? But I wanted to move.

Okay, I knew I should be reasonable. I had never even been there before so a visit was a good place to start. I didn't even know where in North Carolina I wanted to move to!

So, that's how it all started. And I have to tell you, my love of North Carolina is stronger then ever. I hope these books, the best North Carolina books I have found, will provide you with the information you are looking for about North Carolina!

Here are some of the best North Carolina books that I own and love. As you can see, I'm adding what the book is about but also why I love the book as well. for a more personal touch.

If you have any favorites, please let me know. I love good books but especially ones about North Carolina!

But as you know, books can only give you a small sampling of what a place is like. In order to really know, you have to visit! Most books just can't do a place total justice.

But here are the books that I have and love, for whatever reasons, which I will share.

Bansemer's Book of Carolina and Georgia Lighthouses

By Roger Bansemer, Author and Artist

This book is written and fully illustrated and as you will see is a must have. Bansemer has traveled to each lighthouse along the Carolina and Georgia coasts in order to faithfully record not only the story of each lighthouse, but also its visual beauty and details you won’t find anywhere else. Bansemer's stunning, realistic paintings will captivate you as you read the history of each of these historic lighthouses. He offers here in full color the only book with an accurate rendering of how each one looks today.

Fodor's The Carolinas & Georgia, 18th Edition (Travel Guide)

By Sheila Turnage

This book is a definite must have.

Very well written and organized, this book had so much information but it is delivered in a well organized way that makes it easy for the reader to find exactly what they are looking for. And the photos are just beautiful!

I like to just sit and browse through this book and can completely forget the time. It's that kind of book

Just some highlights:

  • Extensive historical background and archival imagery
  • Hiking Great Smoky Mountains National Park
  • Driving the Blue Ridge Parkway
  • Small-town festivals and museums
  • Lighthouses of the Barrier Islands

The Houston Chronicle says it perfectly - -"You can read a Compass Guide for information and come away entertained. Or you can read it for entertainment and come away informed...an informational jackpot."

I agree completely!

The Newcomer's Guide to North Carolina: Everything You Need to Know to Be a Tar Heel

By Bill Lee

I really like this book! Most books are for the traveler, people coming to visit. This book is different. It's everything you want and need to know if you live in North Carolina!

Sure, it's a terrific book even if you are just coming for a visit, but my plan is to move. I found Bill Lee's writing style to be friendly and informative and as I read, I feel like I have a friend who is telling me all the great stuff I really want to know.

This book covers information on everything North Carolina and in my opinion is a must have, whether you will be vacationing or moving to North Carolina.

And if you are lucky enough to live there now, but don't have this book...go get it!

Coastal North Carolina

By Terrance Zepke

This is a really good book as well. It has a lot of information about the history and heritage of many of the coastal communities which I find so interesting.

It has Complete listings of so many recreational activities such as golf courses, marinas, even where to launch your boat. If you have interest in kitesurfing and hang gilding this book will tell you the best spots. But it also has information about hidden gems such as Bear Island's Hammocks State Park and the Cedar Island National Wildlife Refuge.

No matter what you are looking for on the North Carolina Coast, this book will help you to find it.
