Winston Salem North Carolina
Winston Salem North Carolina is a blending of culture and North Carolina history, great medical facilities and universities, high-tech industry and various businesses and the arts all wrapped into one beautiful place!
Winston Salem North Carolina is located in the Piedmont (central) part of the state, and has so much to offer vacationing families or couples looking for a romantic getaway.
It is called the "Twin City" for its dual heritage, or "Camel City", a reference to Camel cigarettes and the city's prominent tobacco industry. Other city nicknames include "The Dash", referring to the dash between "Winston" and "Salem", or the "Tre-Fo" (three four), referring to the fact that Winston-Salem is home to three North Carolina universities and one college:
Winston-Salem State University - a historically-black university founded in 1892.
The University of North Carolina School of the Arts, (formerly the North Carolina School of the Arts) and
Salem College, a four-year liberal arts college for women.
The city of Winston Salem North Carolina has many attractions that include Museums, the arts, Gardens, North Carolina state parks and of course, sports and Shopping.
Old Salem is one of the most popular historical spots and even today looks much like it did since William Loughton Smith visited in May of 1791.
Old Salem is now a living history museum where you can go to and see what it was like to live there in the 18th century. Costumed interpreters work their trades and are happy to answer your questions about what made that time and place so special then and why it is still special today.
As you visit the Winkler Bakery the smell of fresh bread takes over your senses as you watch the women in long dark dresses and white bonnets slide loaves of bread into the wood fired ovens.
Don't forget to stop by the Single Brothers house and the Old Salem Tavern while your there.
The guides in Old Salem are very educated and are happy to talk. Some other events you won't want to miss are:
Civil War Day
Twilight Tours
Harvest day
4th of July
Classes
Festivals
...and more!
